Typically TVs are sold based on a diagonal across the center of the screen. The diagonal splits the large rectangle into two equal right triangles. Assuming that is the case here, that diagonal is the hypotenuse of the right triangles formed. We can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the width.
a2 + b2 = c2 where a and b are legs of a right triangle and c is the hypotenuse
Since we know one of the legs and the hypotenuse for the TV we can use that information to solve for the remaining side we let
a = width
b = height = 28 inches
c = the hypotenuse = 53 inches
c2 - b2 = a2
532 - 282 = a2
2025 = a2
We need to take the square root of a2, 2025, to solve for a
√2025 = a = 45
So the width is 45 inches
