A French-at-heart, caring French instructor
In a French phonetics class, you would learn that the -ai ending is supposed to sound like the phoneme e (the sound of é- in été) and the -ais ending is supposed to like the phoneme ɛ (the sound of -ai- in faites). This is the way you would be taught to speak properly in a French class, but in reality, in fluent daily use, the endings end up sounding the same (like the sound of é- in été).
