As a Latin teacher in the USA, I can say that there is some confusion about Latin America vs. Latin (the language spoken by the ancient Romans) in the USA, and I am often clarifying this for random people when it comes up in conversation. I don't actually know how or if this misunderstanding plays out in Italy, but my expectation is that it would be less of an issue in Europe because they are all generally more aware of their own history (which includes the Romans, who spoke Latin).
My understanding about Latin America is that it's called Latin America because of the influence of Spanish and Portuguese, both of which derive from Latin, but you would get better information about this from an expert in Latin-x culture and history.
