That's a great question. I always like to think of the Swiss Alps when it comes to this type of discussion.

Were it not for the ingenuity of Swiss designers and engineers, in making Swiss goods lighter (think Swiss cheese), the area would be massively affected by the Alps.

If an area is disadvantaged due to its topography, it can certainly make an impact on trade and development of that area.
