In the United States, a PhD is the highest “awarded” degree. Awarded meaning as a result of the successful completion of proscribed coursework and a defended written thesis. A person with a PhD can pursue postdoctoral work...which typically entails a period of time for mentored research and other scholarly training with the purpose of acquiring additional professional skills.

Jedi Master (?) In United States, a PhD is the highest degree you can get. There are postdoc positions at some universities, but these are merely a research position that are not permanent, not a higher degree. There are some exceptions in other countries, but in the US a PhD is the highest degree one can obtain.
