As a professor of student success strategies, I would emphasize the importance of finding a tutor on the first day of class to all of the students as well as include this information on your syllabus. After the first exam, it would be helpful to have a private meeting with those students who did not do well. In this meeting, you can emphasize the importance of connecting to the tutoring center as well as finding out how they are studying and how much time they are putting into the work. You may also become aware of any personal issues that could be affecting their grades. Again, encouraging students and connecting them to university resources such as tutoring, career counseling/advising, and personal counseling can all be appropriate responses.
