Adaptive radiation is a term used in evolutionary biology where one species diversifies to fill individual niches in an ecological environment. The classical example are Darwin's Finches on the Galapagos islands. All the different species of finch had a common ancestor but through natural selection, specific traits became the dominant trait in specific micro environments on the islands because they were the traits that allowed the birds in that area to gain food, compete for mates, and pass on their genes to the next generation.
