Actually, you can use the phrase in either case, whether the person means "love" or "like" is understood based on the context. For example, if someone said "Mon compain m'a dit qu'il m'aime" you could technically say that it can mean either "my friend told me he likes me" or (which would probably be more normal) "My boyfriend told me he loves me." Notice how "compain" can also mean friend or boyfriend. It definitely makes for a more discreet relationship status:)
