The scale on a map is 1 cm for every 400 km. If Maine and Japan are 22 cm apart on the map, what is the distance between Maine and Japan?

This is a simple proportion problem.

In proportions we put the similar units in the numerator (top of fraction) and similar units in the denominator (bottom of fraction)

1 cm/400km = 22cm/x

Cross multiply to get

1x=22(400)

X=8800 km
