Your body produces hormones in reaction to stressful events, or your body's hormone production may affect your emotional states. For example, if you are fearful or have anxiety, you may produce more cortisol and less serotonin. This can affect your energy levels and immune system. PTSD can create similar effects. Physical problems can cause depression, and some people report depressive episodes after major surgeries such as multiple bypass surgery.
