The most relative for ə sound in Arabic?

The IPA for "man" in American English is mən. Arabic, however, doesn't have the vowel sound ə. So, what's the most related sound in Arabic? I know there are some short vowels (Harakat) but I don't think they include this specific sound. In addition, when Arabic speakers want to mimic this sound, they presumably sound odd a little bit. So, I was thinking to "approximate" this sound to one of the existing sounds in Arabic.

Great question. There are actually two different English vowel sounds that often get confused.

The vowel in man is /æ/ (the same vowel as in cat, hat, and apple). Arabic doesn't have an exact equivalent to /æ/, so native Arabic speakers usually approximate it with fatḥa /a/. That's close enough to be understood, but it isn't identical.

The schwa (/ə/) is a different sound altogether. It's the relaxed, unstressed vowel you hear in words like about, banana, and the second syllable of problem. Arabic also doesn't have a true equivalent of /ə/. When Arabic speakers pronounce it, they typically substitute a short a, i, or u, depending on their dialect or how they interpret the spelling.

So, if your question is specifically about man, the closest Arabic approximation is a fatḥa, even though it won't sound exactly like an American English /æ/. If you're asking about the schwa (/ə/), there really isn't a direct Arabic equivalent, and it's best to think of it as a separate English vowel that has to be learned on its own.

You are correct, using the Arabic vowels in this case will not help mimic the sound of the letter ‘a’ in “man” in American English. If you use the fat-ha فتحة, you will end up with the word “men,” which also happens to mean “who” in Arabic. If you use the kasra, كسرة, you will end up with “min,” which in Arabic means “from.”

The word “man” as pronounced in American English, if we had to write it a different way, could also be approximated as “mayn” or “main.” If you tried to pronounce either of these two, you will see that it is only an approximation and still won’t sound like what you’re looking for. Trying to approximate it in Arabic does a similar thing. You can write it as مَين which will sound like “main.”

Your best bet would be to use the pronunciation of “man” where the ‘a’ is pronounced like that in “apple,” where you could use مان.
