Cadmium chloride splits into its component ions, Cd²⁺ and Cl^-. In order to be balanced, the two chlorine atoms on the left mean there are two chlorine ions on the right.

 

CdCl_2(aq) → Cd²⁺_(aq) + 2Cl^-_(aq)
