This would be easier if you had 3 children and 6 pieces of fruit tape. Each child would get 2 pieces.
Since you have 7 pieces, you'll have 1 piece left after each child gets 2 each. You take that piece and cut it into 3 pieces. Each of the little pieces is 1/3 of a fruit tape. Each child gets one of the little pieces too. So now each child has 2 1/3 pieces.
If this still doesn't make sense, get some paper and make 7 strips, then start dealing them out into 3 piles. Then take the remainder piece, and chop it up evenly and give the pieces out.
When you write the problem out as a math statement it is: 7 ÷ 3 = 2 1/3 This is the same as 2 R 1, except we're dividing up the remainder too!
