Word Problem PLEASE HELP

Question

A car passes a landmark on a highway traveling at a constant rate of 45 kilometers per hour. One hour later, a second car passes the same landmark traveling in the same direction at 65 kilometers per hour. How much time after the second car passes the landmark will it overtake the first car?

d=r*t

d=45*(t+1) (the first car travels one hour more than the second car)

d=65*t

65t=45(t+1)

65t=45t+45

65t-45t=45

20t=45

t=45/20

t=2.25 hours is the answer

check:2.25*65=146.25

         3.25*45=146.25

Make a chart.     Rate   *     Time    =     Distance

            Car #1    45         (x + 1)         45(x + 1)

 

            Car #2    65             x               65x

 

Car #2 is traveling 1 hour longer than Car #1 that is why its time is (x + 1)

 

The equation comes from the Distance column. Both cars traveled the same distance.

 

So,    45(x + 1)  =  65x

 

Solve the equation and you will find that it took Car #2   2.25 hours to catch Car #1 after it passes the landmark.
