I would say they can be used interchangeably but "endroit" is generally more specific like "un endroit pour la table" or "un endroit pour parquer la voiture." "Lieu" is more descriptive of a place like "lieu de naissance" or "lieu de travail."
I contend that "endroit" is more akin to a "spot" in English (like a parking spot) whereas 'lieu" is more descriptive of a "location" or a "place" (like a friendly place to live or a charming town).
