Hello Hailey,
The first thing we want to do with this problem is to convert the yard into inches, okay? I am sure you know that one yard equals 36 inches. Since we are dealing with a square, the following properties apply:
The diagonals of a square bisect its angles. Bisect simply means to divide into equal parts. Opposite sides of a square are both parallel and equal in length. All four angles of a square are equal. Each angle is 90 degrees and this is due to the total angles in a square being equal to 360 degrees. Therefore, all angles in a square equal 90 degrees and are right angles.
Since the square in your problem is one yard in perimeter, this means each side is 9. How do we know? Because there are 36 inches in a square and there are four equal sides. 36 divided by 4 is equal to 9.
The area of a square is determined by taking one of the sides and multiplying it by itself. In your case the length of one side is 9 therefore when calculating the area, simply multiply 9 times 9 which equals 81.
Therefore, your answer is eighty-one square inches.
