word problem.

Question

 

at a fruit factory there are 3 crates of fruit. One crate contains only apples. One crate contains only oranges.The other crate contains both apples and oranges. Each crate is labeled. One reads "apples", one reads "oranges", and one reads "apples poles and oranges". But the labeling machine has gone crazy and is now labeling all boxes incorrectly. If you can only take out and look at just one piece of fruit from just one of the crates, how can you label ALL of the crates correctly?

the crates are labeled A, AO, and O for apples, apples and oranges, oranges

they are all mislabeled

take out one piece of fruit from the crate labeled AO (which contains only apples or only oranges !!!)

if it's an apple the crate labeled AO contains all apples, the crate labeled O contains apples and oranges, and the crate labeled A contains all oranges

if it's an orange the crate labeled AO contains all oranges, the crate labeled O contains all apples, and the crate labeled A contains apples and oranges

now you can label the crates correctly

the key is to pick from the crate labeled AO !!
