The area of a rectangle is 576 m2. The length of the rectangle is 4 times greater than the width. What are the length & width of the rectangle ?

The width can be designated 'x' and the length '4x'.

A = l * w

576 = x ( 4x)

576 = 4x²

Divide by 4,

144 = x²

x = 12 m

4x = 48 m

The area of a rectangle is length x width so l * w = 576

If l = 4w the 4w * w = 576

 

divide both sides by 4

   w * w = 144

 

or w squared = 144, so take the square root of both sides to find w.

After you find w, then find the length which is 4 x w
