Paula, par is the score that the average person should be able to score on each hole, added together for par of the entire course. More difficult holes have a higher par. You, of course, want a lower score, because you are counting the number of strokes it takes you to get the ball in the hole.
Let's say you come to a hole with a par of 3 and it takes you 5 strokes to get the ball in the hole. Then your score for the hole is 2 over par. If the next hole has a par of 2 and it takes you 2 strokes, then you are even for the hole, while your overall score is still 2 over par.
So, you keep score for each hole (total strokes and compared to par) and add them all together at the end. If you are over par, your score is higher than par. If you are under par, your score is below par. You can also be even.
So, if you hear that Tiger Woods is six under par after the 15th hole, that means his score is 6 points lower than par. If par is 66, then Tiger's score is a 60.
I hope this helps!

Paula, I'll give you another hint. If I score 70, which is 5 under par, then par is 75. I am 5 under par because my score is 5 less than par. Make sense now?

Ok...I think i got it. So on my question for the score was 90 and 6 over par...then the answer would be 84?

Yes, Paula, don't let all the words freak you out. Just chill out and figure out step by step what they mean mathwise! You'll be fine!
