Lily and Sara each had equal amount of money at first. After Lily spent $18 and Sara spent $25, Lily had twice as much as Sara. How much money did each have at first?

I had it as 2(x-18) = (x-25)...I don't understand why you multiply sara's side by 2 and not lily's. It is lily that has twice as much money after they spend money.

Ahh...I get it now. Lily's amount is equal to twice Sara's amount. So you have to multiply Sara's amount by 2. Now here is the kicker, this is a word problem from Singapore 5a math curriculum. In 5a algebra hasn't been introduced to the student yet. How do you solve this without algebra?
