Whenever you have this type of question, you have to figure out math terms for the words in the question.
Let's call our numbers a and b.
The first sentence tells us that a + b = 64
The larger number: b
Subtracted from four times the smaller number: 4a -
4a - b = 31
Since you cannot solve an equation with two variables (letters) we'll use the first equation to find a different name for a.
a + b = 64. If we subtract b from both sides: a = 64 - b
Now we can plug in 64 - b instead of a in the second equation: 4(64-b) - b = 31
Distribute the 4: 256 - 4b - b = 31
Combine like terms: 256 - 5b = 31
Subtract 256 from both sides: -5b = -225
Divide both sides by -5: b = 45
Now plug 45 into the first equation instead of b: a + 45 = 64
Subtract 45 from both sides: a = 19
So your two numbers are 19 and 45.
