A bike rental shop charges $20 to rent a bike,plus $1.50 per hour you ride.If joe rented a bike and plans to spend exactly $29, write an equation to model how many hours Joe will ride the bike.

Total Cost = Rent plus rate * hours.

 

29 = 20 + 1.50 * h

Subtract 20 from both sides of the equal sign...

9 = 1.50 * h

Now divide by 1.50 on both sides of the equal sign...

6 = h

h = 6

So, Joe can ride for up to 6 hours.

Gema, let's think about this.  If we rode for 2 hours, we'd pay the $20 plus $3, because $1.50 x 2 = $3, right?  We'd pay a total of $23.  That would look like $20 + $1.50(2) = $23.

 

Let n = the number of hours Joe rode.  I think you can figure it from here!

 

Remember, though, that we always put the term with the variable first, so you'll have to reverse the terms on the left from what I typed.
