ab = -24
a = -24/b
a + b = -5
(-24)/b + b = -5
Multiply both sides by b.
-24 + b2 = -5b
b2 + 5b - 24 = 0
(b + 8)(b - 3) = 0
b + 8 = 0 or b - 3 = 0
b = -8 or b = 3
a = 3 a = -8
