Mary has 1 dollar more than 4 times the amount of money john has. The difference in the amount of money is 17 dollars. Find the amount of money they each have. I got an answer where the decimal is repeating, so I feel like that can't be right ...

Let x = the amount of money John has

Let 4x + 1 = the amount of money Mary has

4x + 1 - x = 17

3x = 16

x = $5.33

4(5.33) + 1 = $22.33

Check: 22.33 - 5.33 = $17
