Hi Samira,
1. Start by writing out your terms with their units (labels)
9 hours + 12 minutes = ______ minutes
2. Then write down the outside info you need
60 minutes = 1 hour
3. Multiply the hour by minutes per hour to convert the hours into minutes
9 hours x 60 minutes/hour + 12 minutes
The hours cancel out, leaving that term in minutes ( 9 x 60 minutes = 540 minutes)
4. Now you have 540 minutes + 12 minutes = 552 minutes
In case you have more math problems like these to solve, you can search for info on "dimensional analysis" (sometimes called unit-factor or factor-label problems). You might see these in science class (like converting liters to pints) or word problems involving money. You can solve all of those types of problems with this same approach!
