I'm not sure my answer is right

Question

What is the results from translating the function f(x)=(x+4)^2 to the right 8 units.

The answer I came up with is (x+12)^2

Remember, Destiny, that what happens inside the parentheses is the OPPOSITE of what you want to happen.  To move your graph to the right, you need to subtract 8 instead of adding 8.  Outside the parentheses (moving the graph vertically) happens the way you think it does.

 

If we want to move f(x) = x² right 1 and down 4, it would turn into (x-1)² -4.

 

So, subtract 4-8 instead of adding 4+8.  You should get (x-4)².

Destiny, the answer is not right because initially the vertex of the parabola is (-4,0), hence, the parabola was shifted to the left 4 units initially. If you shift the parabola to the right 8 units, the new coordinates of the vertex would be at (4,0). Therefore the new equation would be:

 

f(x)=(x-4)^2
