Most teachers want you to solve this by making common denominators and then cancelling out those denominators.
1/4 + 1/x = 1/1 common denominator of 4x
x/4x + 4/4x = 4x/4x if you multiply both sides by 4x you'd get
x + 4 = 4x
4 = 3x
4/3 = x
You can also solve it by subtracting 1/4 from bothe sides to get
1/x = 3/4 cross multiply to get
3x = 4
x = 4/3
