Sickle cell anemia (or sickle cell disease) is an inherited disorder where the red blood cells take on an unusual shape (looking sort of like a sickle). This is accompanied by a mutated form of hemoglobin. The red blood cells then die earlier than normal and thus there is a shortage of normal, healthy red blood cells.
