The perimeter of a rectangle P = 2L + 2W, where L = length and W = width.
Given: W = L - 40; P = 600 cm
Substitute values into the equation: 600 = 2L + 2(L - 40)
Distribute: 600 = 2L + 2L - 80
Add like terms: 600 = 4L - 80
Add 80 to both sides: 680 = 4L
Divide by 4 on both sides: L = 680/4 = 170 cm
CHECK: W = 170 - 40 = 130
P = 2(170) + 2(130) = 340 + 260 = 600 cm
Length of the rectangle = 170 cm
