Much of reading was done by candelight or oil lamplight.  If a homemade candle burns at the rate of 0.23 inches in 30 minutes, how long will a 9.1 inch candle burn?

This is division problem, you can tell because of the word "rate".

 

How many times does .23 go into 9.1? Use a calculator . .  9.1 / .23 = 39.56

 

This number times 30 is how many minutes it will burn for . . . 30 x 39.56 = 1186.96 minutes

(You will want to convert this to hours.)

 

How many times does 60 go into 1186.96? Use a calculator . . . 1186.96 / 60 = 19.78 hours
