with 5 1/2 + 1 1/4 = 11/2 + 5/4 = 22/4 +5/4 = 27/4 divided by 2 = 27/8 = 3 3/8 which = 3.375

or sticking with mixed fractions 5 1/2 + 1 1/4 = 5+1 + 1/2 +1/4 = 6 3/4 divided by 2 = 3 3/8

that's the AM = Arithmetic Mean. there's also GM and HM, Geometric and Harmonic Means

GM = sqr(5.5x1.25) = sqr(55/8) = sqr(55/2)/2= about 2.62202212

HM = GM^2/AM= (55/8)/(27/8) = 55/27 = 2 1/27

AM> GM > HM
