The whole train is 32 inches long. Take off the engine and it's 32 - 7 = 25 inches long. Take off the boxcar and it's 25 - 3 = 22 inches long. Take off the caboose and it's 22 - 4 = 18 inches long. Now the 18 inches are all passenger cars since we took off the engine, box car, and caboose. Passenger cars are 9 inches long so divide the 18 inches by 9: 18 ÷ 9 = 2 passenger cars. That makes sense because each passenger car is 9 inches long, so two of them would be 9 + 9 = 18 inches long.
