Andre borrowed $20,000 to buy a truck for his business. He borrowed from his parents who charge him 2% simple interest. He borrowed from a credit union that charges 4% simple interest, and he borrowed from a bank that charges 5% simple interest. He borrowed 5 times as much from his parents as from the bank, and the amount of interest he paid at the end of year 1 was $620. How much did he borrow from each source?

(5x) + (x) = 620

6x = 620

x = 620/6 = 103 1/3 interest on 4%

and 518 2/3 interest on 2%

5 times as much borrowed at 2 as at 4%

5y+y =20,000

6y = 20,000

y = 20K/6 = 10K/3 = 3,333 1/3 borrowed at 4%

5y = 50K/6 = 16,666 2/3 borrowed at 2%

.02(16,666 2/3) + .04(3,333 1/3) = 466 2/3
