There are many properties that made it ideal for everyday use: strength, elasticity, resistance to heat, uv rays, etc. Chemically speaking, it is polymer of repeating carbon subunits with amide linkages between them. As such, it has no easily reactive groups, allowing it to withstand multiple laundry cycles. The repeating units gives the structure its strength.
