find hypoteneuse when both legs =x

Question

have a right triangle (isosceles)  problem that lists both shorter legs as "X" and asks to find the length of the hypotenuse.

Just follow the Pythagorean Theorem. In this case both a and b equal x. So, 

x^2+ x^2= c^2

2x^2= c^2

x sq.rt. 2 = x

This is a special type of right triangle commonly known as 45-45-90.
