Help-6th grade math word problem- can't help my son

Question

At a recent convention of millipedes and centipedes held at the Hotel dFleeflea, the desk clerk registered 293 guest. He noticed that each millipede had 16 legs and that each centipede had 14 legs. Nicholas, the shoeshine spider, reported that there were 4, 408 legs in total at the convention. How many of the 293 guest were centipedes, and how many were millipedes?

Let x = the number of centipedes

Let y = the number of millipedes

x + y = 293

y = 293 - x

14x + 16y = 4408

14x + 16(293 - x) = 4408

14x + 4688 - 16x = 4408

-2x = -280

x = 140

y = 293 - x = 293 - 140

y = 153
