A plane flies the 3458 miles from NYC to London with a 50 mph tailwind. The point of no return is the point where the time to return to NYC is the same as the time to fly on to London. The speed of the plane in still air is 360 mph. How far is NYC from the point of no return?

I deleted my previous answer which was incorrect!

Let x = the distance from NYC to the point of no return and y = the distance from there to London.

x + y =3458

The time from the point of no return to London or to NYC is the same.

Flying from the point of no return to NYC is against the wind and therefore takes x/310 hrs

while flying from the point of no return to London is flying with the wind and takes y/410 hrs.

x/310 = y/410

x/y = 310/410

Add 1 to each side

(x + y)/y = 720/410

3458/y = 72/41

72y = 41*3458

y = 41*3458/72 = 1942.164384

x = 3458 - 1942.164384 = 1515.835616
