Good Afternoon, Taleesha,
The equation which your problem creates is as follows:
2x - 4 = x - 10
Note: 4 is being subtracted from twice a number. We don't know what that number is, so we can assign it a variable of x, right? This is the left side of the equation. When you see the words "the result is," you can know with certainty that the problem is saying "equal." What is equal? The left side of our equation is equal to "10 less than the number." Remember we gave the variable x to substitute for the number, right. Therefore, the right side of the equation is x - 10. With all of this information, all we need do now is solve the equation to find the number, correct?
2x - 4 = x - 10
x - 4 = -10 <----Step One: Subtract x from both sides of the equation
x = -6 <-----Step Two: Add 4 to both sides of the equation.
Now, let's check our work, okay? ?
2 (-6) - 4 = -6 -10
-12 -4 = -16
-16 = -16
The solution checks out. I hope this solution assists you and wish you a great day. If you need further clarification to this solution, please feel free to leave any feedback in the comment section. If you need further assistance, please feel free to reach out to any tutor.
