A truck driver travled 924 miles from 8 am tuesday to 5 pm Wednesday. During that time he stopped 30 minutes for lunch and gas at 1pm tuesday and then stopped that night a 7pm and was back on the road a 5am wednesday morning then stopped 30 minutes at 1pm wednesday for lunch and gas. What was his average speed? please show how to figure this out

His average speed is the total distance driven divided by the total time of driving. The total distance is given, 924 miles.

Total time gone from 8am Tuesday to 5pm Wednesday is 33 hrs. However, you have to subtract the 30mins, or 1/2hr, from Tuesdays' 1pm break, the time from 7pm Tues. to 5am Wed., 10hrs, and the 30min break, 1/2hr, at 1pm Wed.

Total distance=924 miles

Total driving time=33-1/2-10-1/2

                         =33-10-1

                         =22hrs

Average speed=distance/time

                     =924/22

                     =42miles/hr

                     =42mph
