Need help solving

Question

A basketball player scored 22  times during one game. SheShe scored a total of 31 points, two for each two-point shot and one for each free throw. How many two-point shots did she make? How many free throws?

Answer 1

t + f = 22

2t + f = 31

 

What I would do is solve each for f.

 

f = 22 - t

f = 31 - 2t

 

Since f equals two things, they equal each other.

 

22 - t = 31 - 2t

t = 9

 

f = 22 - 9

f = 13
