Assume that three identical tennis balls fit into a can with no room to spare. If the can is 12 inches high, what is the volume of 1 tennis ball

If three identical tennis balls fill up a 12" tall can then each ball has a diameter of 4" (12/3 = 4)

 

That would make the radius of each ball 2" (radius = 1/2 * diameter)

 

The formula for the volume of a sphere is

V = ⁴/₃ * ╥ * r³ 

 

So the volume of one tennis ball would be 

V = ⁴/₃ ╥ 2³

 

Now you can solve for the volume
