If we let M represent the number of miles Ken travelled, it costs the original rental amount ($45) AND the additional cost of the mileage put on the truck (0.30/mile  *  M miles), so the equation is:

 

 

45 + 0.30 M = 69.60

 

Subtract 45 from both sides.

 

0.30 M = 24.6

 

Divide both sides by 0.30 to isolate the "M"

 

M = 82 miles

.30X = 24.60

X = 82 miles
