hi Elise--
here's one way: 5 dogs x 8 days is 40 "feeds."
3 cans give you 2 "feeds." So you need to figure:
3 is to 2 as ______ is to 40. That missing number will be the number of cans you need.
Then, to answer the question, you'll need to multiply the number of cans by the price per can, which is given as $1.24.
Can you take it from here? Let me know what answer you get!
Good luck,
Matt

nope, the missing number is going to be more than 40. if 3 cans takes care of 2 "feeds," it's going to take a LOT of cans to take care of 40 feeds...
think of 3/2 as a fraction--if you change the denominator to 40, think about how you got there--you multiplied the 2 by 20.
Now, whatever you did to the denom, you have to do the same thing to the numerator--so multiply the 3 by 20 also.
So your number of cans is 3 x 20, which is... :-)
Now multiply that number by $1.24 for the total cost.
Better?
Hope this is in time for class! :-)
