A rowing team rowing with the current traveled 40 km in 2 h. Rowing against the current the team could travel only 16 km in 2 h. Find the team's rowing rate in calm water and the rate of the current.

40 = 2(r+s) = 2r + 2s

16 = 2(r-s) = 2r - 2s

56 = 4r

r = 14

16 = 2(14) - 2s

16 = 28 - 2s

-12 = -2s

s=6

The speed of the boat is 14 and the speed of the current is 6
