The distance you travel while hiking is a function of how fast you hike and how long you hike at this rate. You usually maintain a speed of three miles per hour while hiking. Write a statement that describes how the distance that you travel is determined.

Since the distance traveled is a function of the speed and time, then it is the distance formula as a function.  

The distance formula is d = rt

So written as a function it would be

         f(t) = 3t

where  f(t) = d and the r is the 3 mile per hour speed or rate.

Since the time is not given it is the variable data and the determining factor of each answer.  For example, if you hiked for 2 hours, the distance you hiked would be f(2) = 3x2 = 6 miles
