Hi Rachel,
It looks like end zone is excluded and you have to put w for additional yards for each end zone.
So, side ways (left to right) (sideline to sideline) is 30 yds wide and "down the field" is 100yds. Because you have to add w for each end zone "down the field" or "total length" of the field comes about to be 100+2w. So, let's revisit how to express the area of rectangle: L * W = Area. So, here is the expression:
(30) * (100+2w) = total area of the athletic field (football field).
(30) * (100+2w) = total area. That's it (for in terms of w).
