Hello Tiffiney,
My name is Ziyad and I am going to help you solve this problem. This is a "rate" problem, and in order to solve it, we are going to use fractions (eww!).
It's okay though, because we see rates all the time. For example if the speedometer in a car or bus reads the speed in "miles per hour". so if the gauge points at 20, the car is going 20 miles per hour.
Another way to say that is 20 miles / hour.
Getting back to the problem, we see we have a machine that fills 4932 cartons of milk in 0.5 hours.
Another way to put that is 4932 cartons / 0.5 hours.
As you can see we have a fraction with 4932 cartons in the numerator and 0.5 hours in the denominator. One of the properties of fractions is that you can multiply the top and bottom number by the same number. (It's the same as multiplying it by "1").
So if we multiply the top and bottom numbers by "2" we get:
(2 x 4932 cartons / 2 x 0.5 hours) this equals: 9864 cartons / 1 hour.
This is the answer to the question asked. Notice that what we did was multiply our original fraction by 2/2. This is the same as multiplying the original fraction by 1 since 2/2=1.
Basically we took (4932 cartons / 0.5 hours ) x (2/2) = 9864 cartons / 1.0 hours
Hope this helps. If you have any more questions you may want to look up "Properties of Fractions" on the internet or in your textbook. Good Luck with the rest of your assignment.
