please explain how to figure linear equations that begin with a fraction.

First use the distributive property to get

3y/40 + 3/20 = 9/16

 

next find a common denominator which is 80. Multiply all terms by 80. I like writing this extra step....

 

6y/80 + 12/80 = 45/80  now when you multiply by 80, you're left with only the numerators....

 

6y + 12 = 45

6y          = 33

y            = 5.5
