Hi Amy! Annotation is a tool used in literature review to help a reader actively engage with the text. To annotate, you must write your notes on what you are reading directly in the text itself. Rather than just underlining or highlighting, writing down important details, questions, thoughts, and ideas you have allows you to think actively about the text rather than passively read it. I would recommend drawing arrows from the text to some of your notes written just outside of the block of text as to avoid crowding. Be sure to write down your questions as you read, because you may find that the text will answer them later on. I hope this helps!
