the length of a rectangle is 5 meters less than twice the width. if the area of the rectangle is 493 square meters, find the dimensions

l = 2w - 5

 

493 = (2w - 5)w

2w² - 5w - 493 = 0

(2w + 29)(w - 17) = 0

 

2w + 29 = 0

2w = -29

w = -14.5

We don't measure in negatives, so this answer is out.

 

w - 17 = 0

w = 17

 

l = 2(17) - 5

l = 34 - 5

l = 29
